Advantages of recycled cashmere

You've always wanted a cashmere scarf or sweater because you know the prestige of this material and its qualities. What you may not know is that the supply of this fine fiber is limited: each goat produces only a small amount of down per year, which is part of why the price is high.

A few years ago the fashion world started working on a way to make the fiber that already exists go further: recycled cashmere.

What recycled cashmere is

Recycling cashmere means taking production scraps and old cashmere garments and putting them through a new manufacturing process to obtain cones of recycled yarn from which new products can be made.

In this production model the fiber gets used twice: the yarn comes from scraps and garments that already exist, so no new raw cashmere has to be combed, sorted and spun to make it, and the scraps and old garments don't end up as waste.

Good practices in production

A whole series of measures go into keeping production lean: buying cashmere from local producers, small and medium-sized companies in the area that can supply quality yarn that is 100% Made in Italy, or limiting production to what is really needed, estimating sales on the basis of the orders received each month. A system of this kind makes it possible to manage resources better and to avoid making products that would go unsold.

The advantage isn't only for the companies or for the amount of yarn that would otherwise go unused, but also for the customer, who can count on affordable, stable prices all year round and on quality products that have just been made.

Bear in mind that recycled fiber is slightly shorter than virgin fiber, so small balls (pilling) are a little more likely to form. That isn't a flaw in the garment, but it is a good reason to follow the washing and storage instructions carefully, so it stays beautiful for longer.
